His Grace Neofitos Kong’ai

Bishop of Eldoret and Northern Kenya

His Grace Neofitos Kong’ai was born in 1970 in the village of Kesengei in the Nandi district in Kenya. He is a graduate of the Patriarchal Seminary of Archbishop Makarios III in Nairobi. He was ordained as a Deacon on September 13, 1998, and as Presbyter on the 27th of the same month by the then Metropolitan of Kenya, now of Zimbabwe and Angola, His Eminence Seraphim. He served in Parishes in Nairobi and at the Patriarchal Academy there as Deputy Head. On February 27, 2005, he was consecrated as Archimandrite by His Eminence Makarios, Metropolitan of Kenya. In the same year he was awarded a Master of Theological Studies by Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Boston. In 2007, he was tonsured a Monk at the Holy Monastery of the Transfiguration in Verroea. He is a doctoral candidate in Pastoral Theology, studying at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

On November 26, 2014, he was elected by the Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Alexandria as Auxiliary Bishop of Nitria, and ordained by His Beatitude Theodoros II, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria, on December 21, 2014, at the Patriarchal Church of St Savvas the Sanctified.

On November 24, 2015, he was elected by the Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Alexandria as Bishop of the newly-established Diocese of Nyeri and Mount Kenya. On November 24, 2023, he was elected by the Holy Synod as Bishop of Eldoret and Northern Kenya.

Bishop Neofitos dedicates the majority of his time to ministering to children and families in need.  He has been instrumental in the construction of St. Nicholas Academy, an Orthodox primary school, as well as St. Luke, a medical clinic, and the Parish Church of St. Anthimos.  Despite these accomplishments, Bishop Neofitos acknowledges that there is still much work to be done in the new diocese. “We need to put systems in place. We need to build churches. We need to help the poor. We need to educate the needy children who don’t have the means to go to school,” he said. The Diocese spans some 50,250 square miles and comprises 60 parishes that are served by 53 priests.

Since his enthronement, Bishop Neofitos has achieved several milestones within his dioceses, including the renovation of 10 churches, the construction of 11 semi-permanent churches, and the building of 2 permanent churches. He has also provided motorcycles to 53 clergy members, enabling them to visit and minister to those in need who live far from their churches.   In 2018, he oversaw the construction and opening of the Diocese Centre for the Diocese of Nyeri and Mount Kenya, which includes a hall that can accommodate 100 people. Additionally, he has sponsored numerous students at the primary, secondary, and tertiary education levels. However, his MOST REMARKABLE ongoing achievement is that HE FEEDS 100 CHILDREN EVERY DAY, and they affectionately refer to him as ‘their papa.’
